I’ll Travel While I Can.

Updated 8 October, 2024

To open my washi-covered envelopes, tamp the contents to one end of the envelope and, at the other end, snip off a bit of a corner, a little triangle. Insert a letter opener or scissors into the gap; and pull across the edge of the envelope, in the same direction as the washi tape. Here's an album of my washi-covered envelopes and some I received.

In January I went to Amsterdam for two weeks. I walked all around the city and took trams and trains, only once getting on the wrong tram. I had a refresher course in European history (it's been a while since 10th grade). I learned why Jews had freedom in Amsterdam in the 17th century, and why Brugge, where I spent a couple of days, is so Catholic. Anne Frank House and the Jewish museum added to what I know about Dutch Jews under Hitler. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum are all wonderful. I need to go back to see the sights I didn't have time to see. I had fresh stroopwafels and will forego cold ones from Trader Joe's. I found the Art Unlimited store and between that and museums, I have 13cm of postcards.

In September I went to Scotland for two weeks. I took a small-group tour and everyone in the group was lovely. We had days and days of rain and lots of rainbows and no one complained. We saw lots of sights, including a drive up the Isle of Mull on a one-lane, two-way road. All the scenery is gorgeous, even in the rain. Living in the flatlands gives me a special appreciation of mountains. Edinburgh is full of witchery shops and no, I did not buy a wand. Ask me about Holyrood Palace.

Postcards

I'm swapping naked postcards on Postcrossing and blank postcards on Swap-bot. It makes it easy to organize my incoming mail.

I send the blank postcards I receive to family and friends and people on Postcrossing. Please send colorful and cheerful postcards that you'd happily send your family and friends. I appreciate quality over quantity. And I always enjoy a good joke.

No, thank you. Sorry, no hearts.
Bent corners, a sure sign a postcard has been through more than a few swaps. Postcards to color, postcards for Christian holidays and legends. Print on demand postcards like Zazzle postcards. Those cheap sepia 32-pcs Vintage Travel Sights Landscape Retro Postcards. Not childish like Distributed by Michael's Inc. designs. Please, no junk.

manders loves kawaii

My favorite kawaii has a face. I love food with faces and anchovies with legs and animals in an unlikely milieu like cat servers at faux Starbucks. I enjoy most characters, especially San-X.

About Japanese kawaii brands: See Pattie's exhaustive list on the KSU group page. Counterfeit sticker flakes are turning up everywhere, from Ali Express and some sellers on Etsy. If it's a Sanrio character and doesn't have a copyright date, it's fake. If it's San-X and largish with thick lines, it's not the real thing. If the price is great, it's probably counterfeit.

No, thanks. Poo and bottoms aren't kawaii to me. 3D stickers from sheets and sticker flakes, especially PVC and puffy. Real photos made cute aren't so cute to me. Unicorns are too sweet for me.

No, thank you.

  • Chocolate. This is a new allergy and I'm struggling to give it up.
  • Christian holidays, etc. I'm Jewish.
  • Ephemera, scrapbook paper, die cuts, and the like. I won't use them.
  • Extras. I have plenty of kawaii, stickers, and washi tape. The extras I send are more of what the swap is for, e.g., an extra postcard or kawaii sticker flakes. Sometimes I write long chatty notes.
  • Food. We keep kosher and we are vegetarians. Most flavored teas aren't kosher.
  • Glitter, sequins and other tiny metallic or plastic bits
  • Pigs
  • Planner items. My iPhone is my calendar.
  • Plastic, if possible. Reuse those bubble mailers!
  • Rubber stamps, and clear acrylic ones too
  • Tobacco smoke residue aka thirdhand smoke. See also thirdhandsmoke.org.
  • Unicorns, except the Unicorn Tapestries dating from the late Middle Ages.

Comment: Love the Horse pc with the horse stamp! I like how it looks like a Polaroid photo! Fun! Thanks!
Response: You're welcome! I have other horse postcards that are drawings. This one seemed more like the horse stamps.

Comment: 💞 💞 💞 Wow!! Thank you for five awesome profile postcards!!! Love the bird on the whale I might have to copy for stickers! Feel sad for the frozen whale. New for me LP and Ed Taus.
Response: You're welcome. I keep my whale postcards for you. There is a bit of a gap between the cute whale with the bird and the vintage image of the dead whale.

Comment: The joke around my home is which appliance is going to crap out at which holiday (sale time!). It never fails! I hope your final range choice has been made and installed by now! I also hope you enjoy your trip(s) to Amsterdam and Rome - I am SO excited for you!!!! It's always a pleasure to hear from you - how did I get so lucky to receive from you two consecutive rounds?? TY for the card as well!!
Response: Range purchased. Since we're going from dual fuel to an induction range the plumber will tie off the gas line and pull it out of the kitchen. After that the electrician will make necessary upgrades. The range will arrive on the 19th, the next day. It was more complicated to make the arrangements than it was to make the purchase. Great sales person - sharp and he'd done auto repairs before and we talked amps and such. He said this job is cleaner.

Comment: Hi Meredith. What a lovely letter. I enjoyed it very much. Your upcoming trip sounds amazing! Ya know I’ve never gone to the Holland MI tulip festival. A farm near me hosts their own. Best of luck with the new range. My mother always buys from local appliance stores. Nice to keep them in business. I bought a stove last year and I hate it. TYVM for the interedting postcards. Happy Chanukah!
Response: You're welcome. Local tulips and appliances!

Comment: 💗💗Tons of hearts! It's always super outside, but inside postcards—awesome!!! Thank you very much—each one goes into a special collection. Did you know there were three cute cats on the whale in the sleeve? I will save two to send back. I am sure we will see each other again in the mailbox.
Response: You're welcome! I have fun putting together swaps for you. If you have the opportunity to send one out one of those extra postcards, please feel free to do so.

Comment: Thank you for sharing your story, and the cranberry salad recipe. I didn't realize anyone in Wisconsin did not like cranberries! Scalloped corn is the dish our family will not be without at Thanksgiving.
Response: You're welcome. I enjoyed writing the letter. Thank you for hosting the swap. I think my in-laws are slow to adopt anything that's different, not just unusual foods.

Thank you so much for all the kawaii mini memos and washi tape for my WW October wishlist! I love them and they are all new to my collection! I was recruited by Bowdoin College for Track & Field. I had my heart set on going there for the longest time but in the end, ended up committing to a D1 University for swimming. What a coincidence though! I really enjoyed reading your letter. Thank you for that too. ❤️
