About Me

Hello! Just a quick note that I'm living and working in between Berlin and Seattle. So I am signing up for some USA swaps and some International swaps. I'm careful to leave lots of clearance so ~~nothing you send will be lost~~!

I read/write/travel/take super long walks a lot. Professionally I'm a.... philosopher? I get paid to sit around and think, which is really lucky/lonely. To make up for the privilege of sitting around having a think all day, in my spare time I volunteer at shelter kitchens or food banks.

I get excited about: sea creatures and weird landscapes, anything/anywhere that looks improbable but is, in fact, real. I love to see others' drawings/paintings/comics/etc. I also like really really weird old postcards, or PCs that make no sense. I have a healthy sense of the absurd. I prefer sincerity over sarcasm. Please write to me about your daily routine, or what you do with your time and how you feel about it. Write to me about how it's like to live in the place where you live (as opposed how it might be like to be a tourist there), or how it's like to have your job. Write to me how to say a strange saying in a language I don't know, and what it means; or explain a really hard to translate joke. Tell me something surprising and awesome you learned recently, or something you did that you're proud of. Write to me the first inspiring or perfect moment that comes to mind.

Mostly I ride my bicycle and get lost. I know between 3 and 6 languages depends on how strict you are with the definition of "know." I've lived in either 4 or 7 countries depending on how strict you are with the definition of "live." I have definitely lived in countries whose language I did not speak at all, beyond "hello" "thank you" "how much is it" "I would love a coffee and a poppy-seed strudel, please!"

This is not another blog post about life-hacking: https://medium.com/compassionate-productivity/the-gentle-calibration-of-the-qualified-self-59aa3c7d1900#.f47de9nmt

PLEASE NOTE: I'm actually kate but my name's not the one on the mailbox so please use the address exactly as I put it in, with that name.

Comment: Thanks so much for sharing your lovely day! Sounds like a lot of fun :) I also had to giggle a bit - my fiance and I live very close to a Donair (apparently the same as the doener you mentioned - I looked it up to check!) place that's very good (the best in our small city, many people say), and he frequents it at LEAST once a week - they know him when he goes in, haha!

Comment: Thank you so, so much Katerena! I LOVED your photo journal and seeing your day in Berlin. The way you described your day made me feel like I was experiencing it with you! Your singing & guitar were wonderful - you're extremely talented! And I just loved your story. I looked at your profile and you are super-cool (disco Darth Vader!? awesome!!!!) and we'd definitely get along, so let me know if you'd like to do some penpalling or private swaps with me!
Response: You sound really interesting too, I'd love to learn more! I sent you a friend request ^_^

Comment: What a nice letter you included. Like you I found it very difficult to pare down my books. The books like a dictionary and a Greek cookbook are unnecessary in the digital age. There's something about expensive coffee table books that keeps me from getting rid of them, even though they take us a considerable amount of room being they are all large. Thanks for sharing.

Comment: I love Tove Jansson's books as well! You know she was from Finland? :)
Response: Yes! Her work is extremely popular in the former USSR, less so in the US, but I do my best to spread the joy of the Moomins and the Summer Book anywhere I go :) Her books have so much kindness and wonder! And I love that all the relationships and friendships are about allowing space for curiousity and exploration and joyful alone-ness. Are there other Finnish authors that are less well-known that you might recommend :) ?
