I'm the co-creater/designer of the stationery and gift company called Rock Scissor Paper. My sister and I started the company together and I feel so lucky that I get to work and create things with her. I'm a native (Los) Angeleno and love living in Southern California. My parents were both from Europe. They came to Los Angeles in the 1960's. I often fantasize about the Los Angeles they knew then: wide open freeways, blue skies and palm trees, and a sense of unending possibility. I have a total of 4 sisters and 1 brother and I love them fiercely. I live with my boyfriend of 16 years. We bought a house a few years ago and I still pinch myself sometimes when I come home. That's how much I love it.
I'm a bit of an anglophile....I love The Libertines, The Clash, Babyshambles, Maximo Park, The Smiths, Arctic Monkeys, Led Zeppelin, Embrace, Radiohead, British Sea Power, Elbow, Radiohead, Jarvis Cocker....oh the list goes on and on. I love The Arcade Fire...there you go, some Canadians! I love how one song can capture a whole time in your life. I don't relate well to people who don't really like music. They don't have to like the music I like; music just has to matter to them. I used to be the girl who spent the afternoons of her adolescence in record shops; I'd waste the hours away flipping through 12-inch imports and the like. I met my boyfriend through a group of friends who all worked at a seminal record store from my youth. He keeps me connected to music when the distractions of every day life steal me away. We both cried when Joe Strummer died. We go to concerts a lot. Mostly smaller clubs where $12 gets you a whole evening of entertainment. Sunday mornings, while we drink coffee and read the paper, he spins music in our living room. Usually something I've never heard before, or something pertaining to a conversation we've had during the week. I treasure Sunday mornings.
I devour books. Fortunately, I have a best friend who does too, so I get all her hand me downs! One of my all time faves is Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. I've read just about everything from the author T.C. Boyle. I like non-fiction books pertaining to subjects that have nothing to do with my life. And lastly, I'm a cookbook whore. I can't get enough of them.
My favorite crafts are pretty much anything I can do with my hands. I spend so much time at the computer each day. For my design company, everything we draw is done on the computer, so for me hand crafts are a way to reconnect with my creativity. I dabble with painting. Lately, I've been really into embroidery on unconventional canvases.
I love all colors really. Brights, pastels, jewel tones. I think for me, its more about the combination of colors...how you use them together to evoke a feeling. Currently I love the color combination in my bedroom....deep aqua walls with an indigo blue ceiling as deep and dark as a moonless sky. I love the new drab eggplant colored shirt I bought, worn with a hot pink scarf. I love the color of fresh peas tossed with lemon zest and pasta. I loved an amazing dress a girl was wearing the other day...vibrant shades of fuschia, ochre and teal with tiny little accents of metallic gold. I wanted to ask her if I could take a picture of it, but I was too shy.
I like the unexpected. I like dreamers and adventurers. I like making up games. I like clean modern aesthetics. I like minimalism in my home. I love growing my own vegetables and then cooking them for dinner. I like art on my walls. I love sushi and beer on friday nights with friends. I'm kind of shy, although many who know me seem to disagree. I love riding my bike. I love feeding my friends. I love marzipan. I love a full calendar. I love baking, especially cakes. I love sitting in the backyard on late summer evenings. I not-so-secretly dream of opening an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. I love board games, and fear I am a little too competitive about them. I love planning parties and having them. I love having friends over for meals and wine and conversation that stretches into the wee hours of the night. I love Sunday mornings. I love the song Sunday Morning by the Velvet Underground.
Shabby Chic, Disney, Stuff from the Target dollar bin that people get really excited about because it's only a dollar, religious stuff (I'm an atheist), overused images and motifs, celebrity culture, Oh and did I mention, shabby chic?
