There is a thread in the forum titled 'can you cut WOOD.' There are pictures and inspiration for you there. Also if you have questions you can ask there as well.

This will be a monthly swap for 12 months. Each month will have a color theme. The color of the month must be the BASE color of the house. Any other colors used (trim, roof line etc.)are senders choice. Any theme is senders choice. These houses can be decoupaged, beaded, painted, classy chic, somerset style, you name it. I have also seen them made into fishing shacks, restaurants and saloons. Let you imagination get the best of you.

The houses are cut from EITHER a pieces of 2 x 4 or 1x4. Not to be taller than 7". Please use different angle cuts at the roof area so everyone doesn't receive all perfectly cut roofs. (pics on thread)

I know I will be placing small hooks on the backs of mine when I receive them to hang on a wall in a row house type design.

PLEASE sand any rough edges to smooth. This will be a part of the rate you receive for the overall project. Most Home Depot's will cut these for you for a very minimal fee. .10 cents I think?

Low down;

  • 1 house
  • must use the color of the month as the base color
  • edges must be smoothed
  • no special requests

  • do not send the same roof style every month (see thread in forum)

  • ALL CQ members are encouraged to participate. But PLEASE, if you don't think you can send out a great quality swap, please don't join.

Sending late will not be tolerated since there is a 12 month time frame to do them in.

If this goes well, we will continue this swap but with themed houses next time~

Here are the monthly colors:

November-burgundy/maroons

DECEMBER/ RED & GREEN OR PINK OR BABY BLUE

Jan. White

February-red

March-green

April-flowers (color any)

May-shades of LIGHT blue

June-shades of purple

July- red/white/blue

August-yellow

September-browns

October-orange

PS/EDIT I also thought it would be a nice idea for everyone to sign the back of the houses, and put their info on it like an ATC. After all it is a peice of art and it would be nice to remember who it came from.

any roof angle cut is fine.

OK, I'm getting PM's about my questionable pink/blue Xmas colors. Please let me explain....A pink Xmas seems to be very trendy right now, baby blue and silver go very well for Xmas and as I was shopping I saw a lot of baby blue Xmas themed things...........it is NOT because baby blue stands for Jebesus and pink for his baby sister thank you very much ahem,

I appreciate the non-decorating for the sides of the houses but does that mean nothing on the sides or do you mean nothing bulky? Many people do put something on the sides, like German scrap or ribbon or. . . well, you get the idea. . . so is that permissible or should the sides just be painted only? And, of course, since partners are assigned monthly you won't necessarily end up with all 'houses' that look exactly like a house, would you?

Oh dear... I too would like to know about the sides. My November house, which I just sent out, does have bulged sides and I have designed my other months similarly.

I would also prefer the sides to be at least painted so each piece can be a stand alone art piece that looks complete, that I can butt next to another house if I choose but I don't "have" to for it to look right.

Sides can be painted or papered or with ribbon. Just nothing bulky. No on ripping down the width measurements. Previously side decorated houses will be fine because that didn't come up until late into THIS swap. But I have had many requests that nothing chunky on the sides.

I'm so sad to be missing this first wooden house swap! I have to keep telling myself to stay focused....I have three quilts to finish by Christmas. I have no time to play house yet....:-( I'll keep telling myself that! I'm glad you decided to decorate the sides though (but not chunky) I want to stand mine alone on a shelf like a little neighborhood and mix in my little trees that I collect. Anyway, is everyone going to post pictures of their houses in the Flickr group as they finish them? I hope so then I can at least watch since I can't play.

Now I'm confused at the sizes. . . a questin was asked if each 'house' had to have the whole 4" in width or could it be ripped down and the response was no ripping down, which confused me or maybe I just missed something. The little houses that are shown here and in the forum do not look to be 4" wide, and the ones you can buy on-line are more like 2-1/2 - 3" wide with various heights of 1-1/2 to 7" tall by 1" thick. . . these wouldn't work then, right?

Tink, it is a standard 1x4 or 2x4. The width is the same on both pieces of wood. There fore all you have to cut is a roof after you've measured out the height. Does that make sense? Feel free to PM me with any questions. The width of the houses are all the same. Only the heights will vary from 3" to 7".

Just an FYI to confound you even more, a 2x4 is actually only 1.5x3.5. Norm Abram can probably tell you why that is.

Norm Abram was the "This Old House" and "New Yankee Workshop" host from PBS. "Measure twice, cut once" were always his sage words of wisdom. I still live by those words today, well, unless I forget.
