Swap Coordinator:stephaniedavies (contact)
Swap categories: Themed  Yarn  Newbie
Number of people in swap:21
Location:Other
Type:None
Last day to signup/drop:September 12, 2007
Date items must be sent by:October 15, 2016
Number of swap partners:2
Description:

This one's gonna be a little different. For this swap, you'll be sending your swap partner all your "ugly" yarn. By this I mean, almost all of us have some yarn lying around which we never use because we don't like the color, texture, fiber, etc. We consider it "ugly".

The idea behind this swap is, while YOU think its ugly, someone else may find it beautiful or unique!

And when you are sending your "ugly" yarn out, just think that you find it completely ugly, but there's only a 50% chance that the person receiving it will think it's ugly, and you get a shot at getting something better!!

Now the catch is, by signing up for this swap, you agree that you may indeed receive "ugly" yarn in return. There is no guarantee you will find it beautiful...these are what others consider "ugly".

BUT you have a shot at getting something better than what you had, which you already didn't like anyway!

If you are still with me here, each person will have 2 partners, and should send each partner at least 1 good-sized (store bought size) skien or ball of yarn (enough to make, say, a dishcloth at the least). You can send more than one ball for hearts. The yarn does NOT have to be store-bought, it can be anything you have in your current stash :) Also you CAN send along smaller balls of yarn (as some people can use small amounts of yarn for granny squares or ephemera, etc.) But you should at LEAST include one good-sized ball or skien of yarn in the package :)

Because "ugly" is a point of view, please rate a "5" as long as you receive your yarn - not if you think it's ghastly :)

This swap is open to the US only. Please list in comments below if you are allergic to certain fibers so that your partner (please check below when you are assigned to your partners) can be sure to take that into account.

Newbies welcome with a filled out profile. Others must have a rating of at least 4.5 with no recent no-sends (if you feel you are an exception, message me and I'd love to chat).

Let's turn these ugly ducklings into beautiful swans!

I am soooo in on this swap. I have a whole bagful of things that I got as parts of lot buys that are perfect for this. Things that are nice yarn, just colors that I am unlikely to ever use.

Someone messaged me to ask if acrylic was okay, and yes it is. There are NO fiber restrictions, I just recommend that you list any allergies in the comments here so that your swap partner can hopefully see that and not send you something you are allergic to. Other than that, anything (including acrylic!) goes :)

Hi, just joined and have to say what a grand idea!!!

and for my partners - i am violently allergic to wool- even the blends so can only work with cotton or other plant fiber yarns /acrylic

Whoever gets me, you can send me partial skeins since I'm using yarn primarily for amigurumi, and leftovers are perfect.

kgeslab 09/ 3/2007 #

I really don't want acrylic, but I guess I'll take my chances!

Momwithahook 09/ 5/2007 #

Can't wait. All fibers and colors are fine with me after all it is a "surprise" ugly yarn swap and you never know what you'll get. :)

Caam 09/ 6/2007 #

Ohhh, this is gonna' be fun! I've got some that needs a new home--hopefully someone will be able to use it so that it's "purpose" in life can be fufilled!

Natural fibers best but fingering anything . . . this is a great way to use those weird grab bag items that someone will love.

I just updated the swap description for clarity. The part I added was:

The yarn does NOT have to be store-bought, it can be anything you have in your current stash :) Also you CAN send along smaller balls of yarn (as some people can use small amounts of yarn for granny squares or ephemera, etc.) But you should at LEAST include one good-sized ball or skien of yarn in the package :)

I would so join this if the date to mail out was farther along.

jessica 09/12/2007 #

I meant I would have joined.

stephaniedavies 09/13/2007 #

I have changed the send out date :) Hope that helps!

Momwithahook 09/17/2007 #

I sent my swaps out to my partners. Enjoy!

Momwithahook 09/20/2007 #

Received swap from S. Davies Thanks a bunch

stephaniedavies 09/22/2007 #

Thanks MomwithaHook!

I just wanted to post a message to the group reminding people that the entire purpose of this swap was that you could get rid of yarn you didn't like on the chance that you might get something you DO like instead. BUT you might get something you like even less than what you sent...that's the chance you took by signing up for the swap.

The only "preference" I allowed was for allergies. If you are allergic to a certain type of fiber, of course you could request not to receive that. But just not liking a fiber is not reason to rate your partner poorly. Acrylic is perfectly OK - in fact, every single skien of yarn I sent to MY two partners WAS acrylic, and also from my own stash (not new).

So your partner should rate you a 5 if they received at least ONE FULL skien of yarn, no matter what the color or fiber. They should give hearts if you sent more than one skien or included anything extra.

...this is just to clarify!

(and the reason I only sent acrylic...and you might want to take this into account with regards to what others send you), unlike a lot of others on swapbot, I don't HAVE a huge stash. I've been knitting for a year, and crocheting for about 2 weeks lol I have exactly 12 skeins of yarn TOTAL in my entire stash/house. And every single one of those is acrylic, except for one roll of peaches & cream cotton for my next dishcloth. I live in a TINY Missouri town, and all that is available at our local walmart (or anywhere within a 1 hour drive) is acrylic yarn with a few select rolls of cotton in the "specialty" crafts aisle. I sure wish I had lots of pretty yarn to send to my partners, but I sends what I have! And since most all of my stash came from local yard sales or Walmart, all I could send was acrylic in colors I don't like lol

So please take into account that while you may not like acrylic yarn (or wool yarn, or cotton yarn, or whatever yarn), this swap was not for picky people, it was for those who wanted a chance to swap out yarn they really didn't like for whatever reason, for a chance to get something they did like. But it was NOT a guarantee :) Thanks for listening to my rants (yes, someone complained to their partner about receiving acrylic yarn lol)

YarnTails 09/24/2007 #

HI! I sent my boxes out to dragonpuck and cerwinrhiannon on Sunday! (Yes, our airport PO is open 24/7 here!)

dragonpuck -- I did make sure you didn't get anything with wool or other "itchy" fibers.

Caam 09/24/2007 #

Yarn Tails and Cerwinrhiannon, your packages are all packed and ready to go out tomorrow! I cannot remember which one got the tan-ish or whatever it is yarn. I think I have some more (I was going to make something for my uncle then found out he does not wear hat/scarfs) somewhere, so let me know if you want it. I will look for it this weekend when I go trolling through my stash.

cerwinrhiannon 09/26/2007 #

Dragonpuck's will go out later today.

I'm having a bit of trouble with my other partner, Cathy, as she hates nylon, acrylics, is allergic to wool, and doesn't like dark colors. That's just about all of my stash. I may have to buy something.

stephaniedavies 09/26/2007 #

NO! Do not buy anything. As I already posted - and my posts were actually referring to Cathy also...from her OTHER partner - the rules were VERY clear in the description before the sign up date. This is NOT about getting what you WANT, it's about getting rid of yarn you DON'T WANT. Please only pay attention to your partner's allergies. If they don't like what you send, that is their problem, not yours, and if you get anything other than a 5 rating, let me know and I'll talk to Cathy myself. :)
