Description:

This swap is based on a "game" that Jane Austen's family played. Each family member was asked to write a poem that "Rhymed with Rose." Jane, her sister Cassandra, her mother Mrs. Austen, and Mrs. Elizabeth Austen each wrote a poem in which all the lines rhymed with rose. You can read all four poems here.

Here is an excerpt of Cassandra Austen's poem:
Love, they say is like a Rose;
I'm sure tis like the wind that blows,
For not a human creature knows
How it comes or where it goes.
It is the cause of many woes,
It swells the eyes & reds the nose,
And very often changes those
Who once were friends to bitter foes.

For this swap, write a poem and send it to 3 partners, typed or handwritten in an envelope. Your poem should be at least 12 lines long. The subject is up to you, but make sure every line rhymes with "rose."

This swap will be international and newbies with well-filled out profiles are allowed. No ratings under 4.9 and no recent 1's and 3's.

Let Jane inspire you! Have fun!

Thanks for the invitation ! I am not sure that my english is good enough for such a swap, but I'll give it a try. If I am happy with what comes out, I'll gladly join !

Thanks for the note. I really prefer much more freedom in prompts. Back in Jane's day most poems rhymed, mine rarely do.

I am watching this one - looks like a lot of fun!

I'm not a very big fan of Jane Austen, haha. I think it's the chick-lit of the 19th century! BUT this sounds like an interesting challenge. Watching for now, thanks :)

Thank you so much for the invitation! Unfortunately I am a bit short on time these days, so I'm not sure if I can come up with something good -_- I'd love to join if you re-host this swap or come up with something similar some other time!

wackywallflower - oh, chicklit! Jane Austen would shudder, I think she aimed at poking fun at standards... but then again, your finished piece doesn't have to have anything to do with Austen or 19th century lit. I'm not one for rhyming my poems, but I thought this would be a fun exercise.

The bookshelf made me curl my toes
Candace Bushnell and cosmopolitan woes
I'd prefer Kerouac even during his lows
Than the Alcott sisters and heroine Jo

Thanks to the others that have joined! At least we'll have enough to do the swap, even just barely!

haha, I'm definitely exaggerating about chicklit... but I hate that the solution always seems to be the young girl with some sort of personality who, like, GASPS!, smoke cigars and rides horses, just ends up marrying a man and becoming "normal".

It does sound like a fun swap, haha, don't get me wrong!

Sorry to be last minute, but I wanted to make sure I could finish the poem before signing up. I've finished it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BohemianPrincess 07/21/2010 #

I will give it a shot I glad it doesnt have to be done from their time period.

I wonder if anyone, like me, had to use half-rhymes? As host, I guess I am saying that it should be acceptable...

bluehairedmary 08/ 2/2010 #

Of course, I just received all three of my partners' poems and feel like a schmuck for using half-rhymes! Please forgive me!
