Swap closed! Please check out the next one--Disposable Camera Swap #2 for more fun!

A disposable camera adventure for those who love photographic irreverence and a good challenge!

Materials required: One disposable camera & a bubble mailer.

Your task...

  1. When you sign up-->note six (or more) possible (varied) themes/subjects in the comments section. These are your challenge/assignment to the person mailing to you!

  2. Get a disposable camera (24 or more exposures).

  3. Choose one (or more) of your partner's themes and take at least 18 artistic, wacky, wonderful, irreverent, satirical, beautiful or inventive photos. (Leave a few exposures for your partner to take when it arrives.)

  4. Mail the camera to your partner with a short note about the theme you chose and your photos/experience/ideas etc.

  5. When your camera arrives you can finish the roll with your own take on the theme(s) they chose from your list.

  6. Develop and enjoy your "crappy camera" photos!

A few notes...

  • Please vary your themes and keep some general enough to accommodate the different opportunities that people may have to take photos. I'll ask you to list a few more if needed.

  • You may choose one or several of your partner's themes. This is your starting point. Do take your partner's theme and give your own take on it!

  • There are several weeks to find your camera & take your photos so you can carry your camera about and try to capture some great shots for your partner. Please plan to spend some time on this. It's not a good project to do the day before it's due! WOW your partner with your take on their theme!

  • Expect the unexpected! Do understand the disposables are unpredictable and many shots may not come out. I want folks to feel free to experiment with the camera and theme rather than to just take safe shots. Please give a 5 if they worked with at least one of your themes and sent along the camera on time. (You can offer feedback on the photos themselves and the efforts taken in the comment.) And of course just let me know if you have any problems, concerns or questions....

  • Any disposable cam is welcome but know that you don't have to simply go to the corner store. There are also Black and White, Lomography Lomolitos (color flash) or underwater disposables on the market etc. and you can also be experimental in how you take the photos (i.e. vaseline on the lens etc). Feel free to use the comments section to list links, resources, ideas and info. if you know of cool disposables or techniques!

  • Not required but nice--> It would be great to find a way to share some of the resultant photos with the person who sent to you. (If you get a disk of the photos you can send a copy to them or a couple of the best prints or email some files.)

Requirement: Please have at least 10 completed/rated swaps and an impeccable swap record. (I will check profiles.) PM before the sign up deadline if you have questions or have been rated unfairly. No flaking folks!

This one is for fun and the love of taking photos!

justchiara 05/14/2010 #

What @Maglet said. I don't have the ratings (nor the time, for that matter) right now, but it's such a cool swap I really hope you will host it again in the future.

fieldstudio31 05/14/2010 #

If folks like this one I will definitely host again. But if any of you just can't wait and want to host this for new folks now you are very, very welcome to reference this one and do so! Have fun!

MamaBear 05/14/2010 #

Exciting swap!!! I, too, would love to join but don't have 15 ratings yet... Really hope you'll run this one again (don't wanna host one parallel to this one myself, as I think it would be a shame to split the potential swappers into 2 groups...).

fieldstudio31 05/14/2010 #

I've changed the required swaps to 10 since I've had so many emails from swappers with great records who are in the 10-15 range. Hope that helps!

Here's a hack for macro photography with a disposable Kodak Max for those who are mechanically inclined!

http://www.diylive.net/index.php/2006/03/11/diy-macro-photography-with-disposable-camera

papercaper 05/18/2010 #

2 user tips for using the cheapest disposable cameras: * Shots taken any closer than 90cm (1 yard?) will probably blur * If no flash, cast lamplight directly on indoors pics at close range for artistic, warm light. I'm sure I've done this before... (Does anyone know this to guarantee failure? Anyone?)

  • FLOWERS - real!
  • FLOWERS - fake! printed! graphic design!
  • SKY - anytime 24/7, objects in sky or none; just make sky dominate photo.
  • STRAIGHT EDGES/ANGLES - think envelopes/tables/bldgs/etc, not xstr8xedgex kids.
  • GUTTERS - street... roof... the horrible liquid fat collector of a George Foreman grill. Interpret!
  • PETS - do you have any? Do you know any?
  • BAG - the bag you use most often, whether handbag, backpack, messenger, doesn't matter!
  • SHOPPING TROLLEYS - or carts. :P
  • PUBLIC SIGNS - anything at all, esp if local to you (therefore interesting to me)
  • BORING PEOPLE IN PUBLIC - taken by stealth or by asking politely, photograph the uninspired, uninspiring or dull. Just don't let them know why you chose them! (2 shots max. They're boring, r'ber?) :X
  • ANYTHING you wanna show me. :)
doublesided 05/18/2010 #
  • Trees

  • Skyline

  • Sunset/Sunrise

  • Water - Sea, lakes, waterfalls etc

  • Neon Signs - don't have them here!

  • People at work - varied please not just 20 shots of your colleagues at the office!

If you need others then just ask!

jaakel 05/18/2010 #
  • summer
  • sky
  • home
  • city
  • people
  • bright colors

i'm trying to be as vague as possible, pick a theme and do what ever you want with it :D. think outside of the box!

fieldstudio31 05/18/2010 #

Thanks for the tips papercaper! I hope others will post theirs too!
I'm not sure about the lamplight question. For all, I'd say that if you want to try new things/experiment and aren't sure how they'd come out, try it for one or two shots and move on. Variety will work well! That way the recipient won't have an entire roll that doesn't come out for the same reason.

MamaBear 05/18/2010 #

Here are my themes: - people holding hands (yes, I know, it's unethical :-p) - red flowers (real, printed, on fabric, whatever) - yellow - street art/graffiti - "through the fence" shots (meaning shots of anything, as long as it's taken "through" something so you can see it as a frame - hope this makes sense) - special cars (vintage, unusual colours, ultra-modern, whatever - just the kind you notice for some reason) - dog faces - building/house numbers

I hope that whoever my partner is will be able to feel inspired by one of those themes :)

I'm excited to get started :)

MamaBear 05/18/2010 #

Sorry - didn't preview first :-/

Here's the list in a less visually offending way:

  1. people holding hands (yes, I know, it's unethical :-p)
  2. red flowers (real, printed, on fabric, whatever)
  3. yellow
  4. street art/graffiti
  5. "through the fence" shots (meaning shots of anything, as long as it's taken "through" something so you can see it as a frame - hope this makes sense)
  6. special cars (vintage, unusual colours, ultra-modern, whatever - just the kind you notice for some reason)
  7. dog faces
  8. building/house numbers

This is in no order of preference!
