Description:

Geocaching is a worldwide GPS game where you get coordinates from www.geocaching.com, type them in your GPS unit, and go treasure hunting for something someone hid. Usually the treasure contains knick-knacks, worldwide souveniers or coins, dollar store items etc, referred to as "swag". It's tradition to take an item and leave one of equal value.

This swap is for 4 "swag" items that could be placed in a geocache. They should be useful, but should not cost more than a dollar each. They can be homemade or used, but must be in good condition. Nothing with scents or food please, since we don't want critters to eat the treasure.

Swappers should have a 4.5 rating and no recent no-sends. Newbies welcome if you message me so I know you aren't going to flake. Have fun!

I'm not quite sure how this works is it one box that gets passed around or is it 4 items to our partners and where does it go from there? I'll sign up and go from there

Yay a swap for geocachers! (I am TeraBACat on geocaching.com) Haven't been out in a while though! This will be great as I have tons of new swag!

Shopandbid - to find out more about geocaching go to www.geocaching.com - it is all explained there. All you need is a handheld gps receiver and a sense of adventure! In a nut shell crazy people like me go to the geocaching website to get the coordinates of where another person has hidden a container. We then use a handheld gps to guide us to the coordinates and find the container. The container will contain a log book to sign and if the container is big enough there will be stuff in it (we call this stuff swag)- usually nothing expensive. The general rules are that if you take an item from the container you put another item in. Then you hide the container exactly where you found it so that the next person can find it. Then when you get home you log your find on the website.

Hey, I'm part of Team Toot Sweet on geocaching.com...I'm in!!!

dreamerkins 08/ 2/2007 #

ok, wait, maybe i read that wrong, but i did'nt see anything that said we actually have to get the swag from geocahing. just that it would be a good item to use for swag. so, if you can't geocache, for lack of a gps, you could still swap. did i understand that right?

TeraBACat 08/ 3/2007 #

I am not the coordinator of this swap but as a geocacher I would say that as long as the items sent are suitable for putting into a geocache, they would meet requirements. Whether or not you geocache and use them for that is up to you. As for me, my swag consists of camping and hiking related things like compasses, hand warmers, waterproof matches, mini first aid kits, flash lights, etc. and I also carry some kids items and super teeny tiny items. I also carry a small package of trash bags that comes in a little plastic pouch so that i can pick up litter on the trails that I hike to get to a cache. Most geocaches are fairly small like a 1qt size plastic food storage container or small ammo can and a good cache is loaded with lots of little goodies. So small items are best. I also try to only use swag that won't get damaged if it gets wet. I hope that helps the non-cachers to understand the whole swag thing a little bit.

Thanks for explaining everything so well, TeraBACat! You were right, we are swapping things that could be put in a geocache, not necessarily things you found in one. So you don't need a GPS to swap. I am Froggie84 on www.geocaching.com. So far I have only been hunting in NY and ND. Thanks for everyone who signed up!! This was a big experiment, I am actually surprised I found geocachers here!!

It's amazing where you'll find us geocachers! My mom just signed up here on swap-bot - I need to go see if she wants to join this swap too...

KellyR 08/14/2007 #

I just got my mom into geocaching recently. Now she says she doesn't like walking the dog anymore unless there is a treasure at the end :-)

TeraBACat 08/15/2007 #

Kelly R - I have to agree with your mom!

Starwatcher 08/15/2007 #

Me, too! That is one of the best things about geocaching - finding new trails around the area you live that also have treasure at the end of them - kind of like the leprachauns pot of gold! This sounds like fun so I'm in. My geocaching name is qmhaStarwatcher (the "qmha" part is for qualified mental health associate - the name Starwatcher was already taken when I signed up back in 2004). Anyway, I'm curious as to what other areas put into their caches - and of course, I love getting mail, so combining geocaching and swapping = Great fun!

I'm so in!! I'm jacal at geocashing.com...well me and my husband are. I have my little stash of stuff for the caches...so this is easy for me!!

Thanks!

TeraBACat 08/18/2007 #

This will be a fun swap! I hope me and my mom don't get each other as partners! LOL! That would be too funny! I'd have to go hide her package in the woods and put the coordinates in the mailbox...

Invisible 08/27/2007 #

Wow, I got my package from TeraBACat today and it was great. It the first time ever my husband has asked to have one of my swaps. I wish I had a camera when he saw the travel bug…it thrilled him beyond belief. Thanks so much for a great swap!!
