Description:

It's quilt block season apparently, sewing being a good thing to do when you're snowed in! I know half of the planet is in summer right now, but we can all still sew!

This swap (Round 1) will be open to beginners, since it's a simple block based on the 9-patch, with triangles combining to make four of the squares.

You will make one two-colored block for one partner, and I suggest that the stars all be make of a light colored fabric for the traditional overall look of this block in a quilt. Your partner may have a preference for the other way around--just ask! The colors are sender's choice, but we can put our dislikes below in the comments, and/or in our profiles, so be sure to check there before making your block.

Use 100% cotton quilt-quality fabrics--don't finish the block, it's meant to be sewn in with others to make a finished top or other item, so no batting or backing either.

for color A (the dark) you'll need four 4.5" (11.5cm) squares and two 5" (12.2cm) squares (for the triangles)

for color B (the stars) you'll need one 4.5" (11.5cm) square, and two 5" (12.2cm) squares

*double check the conversion here--I'm using an old school ruler with US and metric markings

I've made the swap International because I fit one similar block into a greeting card envelope with a zip-loc bag and it went as 1oz first class--not too expensive across the sea--though a good bit of packing tape to make it sturdy (or a tyvek envelope) may help it survive the shipping.

One helpful hint--be aware of which way the triangles are pointing when you assemble the block. They should all point clockwise as in the picture.

Swap-bot Newbies are welcome with full profiles--favorite colors, themes, etc.

Rated swappers must have at least 4.9 adn no recent no-sends--contact me if you think you have been rated unfairly--I will ban questionable swappers--Flakers stink!

PM me with any questions, or if you catch a typo or something I've missed!

Here's a digital sketch of what a quilt made of these blocks can look like--there are many possibilities!

This page has another possibility--and is linked to a huge collection of quilt blocks--free patterns.

If this is a finished 12.5" sq then I think the 5" sqs should actually be 4 7/8" to cut into 2 triangles. Teensy difference I know but.......we want it to fit together nicely:) I really like the light stars on dark backgrounds and will go for random colour backgrounds for this swap please:)

Here is another site with clear cutting and piecing instructions, and a host of instructions for other blocks. (Be sure to follow the directions for the 12" block, not the 6" block!)

I really like it with the star being a lighter color as well. I would prefer a cream or light gold star and darker colors such as brugundy, forest green or blues. something like that anyways I'm not to picky. thanks

ozduchess--you are exactly right! I just ran into trouble with that, though for this block, with only the one size of triangle-squares, 5" works, too and you can trim off the little extra.

Thanks TC, I've been to that site, too, very helpful in fixing the problem I had with another block.

Are you going to be hosting 12 of these so we'll have a finished quilt top when we're done? Are they going to be monthly? Or just random dates? And is this the first one? It sounds like it but if I've missed some I'd really like to do some private swaps with someone to get caught up.

Thanks for hosting!

twobluecrows 01/24/2010 #

This is the first one. I'm in some of the other 12.5" block swaps, and wanted a few of these, too, so I'll probably host more as my time permits, but if I don't, or someone wants them more frequently, anyone that wants to can copy my text and run them.

I would love red background with a white star! I am making a quilt top for my daughter's "big girl" bedroom.

I would love to have blue and white squares but if my partner wants to make something else I can always put it in my "Kitchen Sink" Quilt. Thanks! :-)

Partners are assigned! I hope that with this group of good swappers we won't have any problems and everyone will get something they love, including the joy of having pleased their partner! Have fun!

TC 01/30/2010 #

I don't have a preference on colors, so my partner can go wild!

autumnrainbow97 01/30/2010 #

I think I would like the star to be white with any kind of print, and the background to be any color.

I've posted Round 2 if anyone is interested!

Be careful if you use the tutorial TC posted. The directions are good, but the star's points go in the opposite direction.
