Description:

I am making this project for USA folks only since we will be showing our gratitude and condolences to American families who have lost loved ones who have fought for our freedom:)

Do you enjoy the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from crocheting for charity? How about making some granny squares for our American Heros who have lost their lives fighting for our freedom?

For this swap....well, really not a swap, lol....you will make one 12" granny square in red/white & blue. The squares you make will be used to make ghans for our American Heros and will be donated to American Angels Heroghans .

Ok, now for the details for the type of squares you need to make for this project. All squares MUST measure 12" x 12" and MUST made with 4-ply worsted weight yarn....PLEASE, no chunky yarn,or light weight yarn like simply soft. These cannot be used in these ghans!!! They MUST be made with 4-ply worsted weight acrylic yarn. Make all squares in bright red (not orangey red), true white (not cream) and blue (navy or royal blue is best. Please do not use a shade of blue that looks almost black). You can use varigated yarn, you can make a solid red or solid blue granny or you can use all 3 colors for a combo square. You may also use any pattern you would like for these squares. If you make your square in a solid color, feel free decorate it. (For Example: cross, heart, ribbon, flag, etc.) Just be sure that whatever you use for decoration is only red/white/blue...no other colors can be used. This is always a nice touch, but is not mandatory:)

When partners are assigned I will email everyone my mailing address. All squares must be sent to me, but you will also need to email a pic of the square to your partner. Once I receive your square, and your partner receives the pic, it will be time to rate your partner. As soon as I receive the square from you, I will send a message to your partner to let her/him know that your square has been received. If you do not send a pic to your partner, she/he will have the right to leave a bad rating for you, so you won't want to forget to send the pics!!!

So...here's a recap of what you need to send:

  • One 12" r/w/b square (mail to bettflow09) - Ofcourse any extra squares you would like to send are always welcome:))
  • Email pic of square to your partner

I am inviting all crocheters to join in this effort to show the families of our American Heroes that we care and appreciate their loved one for all he/she has done to secure our American Freedom, however if you are a newbie you MUST have a completely filled out profile and MUST not have any 3 or 1 ratings. If you are an old hand at swapping, you must have a rating of atleast 4.5 with no 1 ratings within the past 6 months.

If this is successful, I plan to host more like this in an effort to collect as many squares as possible to donate to this worthy cause:)

Can we e-mail a pic of the square to our partner??? NO printer at the moment :)

bettflow09 12/11/2009 #

Oh yes...that's what I meant. All you have to do is take a pic and email it, you don't have to pay postage to snail mail it. Sorry, I should have been clear on that:)

Count me in! Aweome project! Are you the lucky lady that gets to assemble the squares?!

bettflow09 12/13/2009 #

Nope, I'm not an assembler for the group yet. I have been a member for a little over a month and just the other day sent my first 2 squares to one of our assemblers.

Here's how it works: We make up squares and as we get them made we list in the database on the group how many squares we have that are made and available to donate to Heroghans. We have several ladies who assemble the ghans. When an assembler is getting ready to start on a new ghan they send an email to members who have squares made asking if they can send 1, 2, 3 squares, how every many ghans they have in the works. Each ghan is made of of twelve 12" squares. Only one square from any one person is stitched into each ghan so that each hero receives a ghan that has been made up by 13 loving sets of hands (12 people made the squares and 1 person assembled). Also, each square is tagged with a condolence to the family on the front & our name, address & email on the backside of the tag.

I look forward to one day becoming an assembler for the group, but in order to be promoted to assembler, a person has to be an active member for atleast 6 months before she is allowed to assemble ghans. I can certainly understand this rule! Would be sad if a newbie joined the group, offered to assemble ghans, received squares for assembly and then disappeared never to be heard from again.

One question I have for ya'll:)) I was planning on tagging each person's square as I receive them (with the makers info ofcourse:), but ya'll might rather tag them before you send, which would be perfectly fine too:) We have tag files on the group that we print off and add our info to. They each has an angel and the url for the group. Some have a pre-written condolence and some are blank for us to add our own condolence. If you would rather tag your own squares I could email the tag files to you after partners are assigned. I will leave that up to each individual though. If you would like me to tag the squares I will be more than happy to do that, or if you would like to fill out your own tag that will be fine too:) You can just let me know when the time comes:))

Also, anyone who would like to join American Angels Heroghans and make these squares on an ongoing basis will ofcourse be welcomed with open arms:)))

I would love to join your effort. What a fantastic idea. Haven't made any squares yet. Just started looking for an organization like yours. Can't wait to get started.
