Description:
For this swap, you will have to make a small journal, about 4-6 inches tall, and 3-5 inches wide, and send it to one partner. You can use any paper types, textures, colors, old junk mail, dictionary pages, thick paper, old photos, lined paper, drawing paper, make it interesting! your journal must have at least 60 front and back pages, and must be sturdily bound, using glue, thread, etc... Please do not bind it using brads or binder rings. You should decorate both covers in a way you think your partner would like, based off of their profile. For those of you who are fans of the "molskine" notebooks, It should be similar to this, a lightweight notebook/journal/sketchbook that can be used as a travel journal, to keep in your purse, for your secrets, drawings, etc.. This should be relatively cheap to send in the mail, probably requiring only an envelope or small bubble mailer. have fun with this swap, and make sure that if you arent familiar with book binding techniques, you google it so you can give your partner something really cool that they can use. Wire binding? is that like how spiral notebooks are bound? Well use your judgement i suppose, if its pretty strong then go for it :] I just had to specify a strong binding, because i hosted a similar swap and got a journal that had one hole punched through and they just put on a binder ring, so yeah. :]

what about requirements to join? do you require a minimum rating and or a minimum number of swaps to lessen the likelihood for flakers?

Do you have any examples of good webties that show you how to do a simple binding?

I looked and couldnt find anything, but i will post it if i find a website about simple bookbinding. The best way to do it in my opinion is to get 3-4 of the leaves of paper, and sew them down the center with a sewing machine or by hand. After you do this with all the pages, you should have 4 or 5 sets of sewn pages. You then fold them along the sewing, glue the packets together at the spine, and then just glue on a cover :] Another way would be just to sew all the pages together in the center, then fold over and add a cover.

I've made journals before and generally I do what revolutionoise suggests, but I sew all the sets of pages to the cover cardboard, then put a pretty finish over it so you can't see the sewing. I do this because if you live somewhere hot (like me in Australia) the glue can come unstuck and the cover will come off. But you can sew and glue for extra precautions. I'll watch this awesome swap for now :)

This is a neat idea, but like Renegades (two posts up), I think I'll practice on my own before risking sending out something crappy. I hope there's a "rerun" or a slightly different version of this swap at some point down the line... after I've practiced.

Do we have to make the journal base. Can't we use a premade that is stitched to hold it together?
