Banned Book Week is 9/26 to 10/3 this year. I thought it would be interesting to see what banned books most of you have read. There are lots of books on the list, some of which are now required reading in Literature classes. banned book list

Yet, every year people request that books be banned from schools, from public libraries, from book stores.

In honor of Banned Book Week, we will be looking at the banned book list and finding those books that we have already read and sending a list to our partner on a postcard. You can list one book or several books, whatever you want. The postcard is senders choice.

Newbies are welcome. Everyone else needs a rating of 4.8 to participate. I will be checking profiles before assigning partners. I can angel if needed, but I hope I don't have to.

Here is another great resource: http://www.ala.org/ala/issuesadvocacy/banned/frequentlychallenged/challengedclassics/index.cfm

Which also leads to my question: Most of lists I have found also include "challenged books" is it okay to inlcude those as well?

DebP 09/24/2009 #

I think that would be Ok, if you just said that on the pc.

DebP 09/24/2009 #

Also, I think there are different books banned in different countries, so those lists might be different.

book banning has always facinated me. my reading was NEVER censored at home as a kid. both of my parents were avid readers. i was allowed to read v.c. andrews, jurassic park, stephen king, and all sorts of "questionable" material in the fourth grade and on. (that's when i started to tackle adult books) the catcher in the rye has always saddened me being banned. our lit teacher kept it on the "borrowing" shelf anyway. along with plenty of other banned books. i LOVE that lady!

Great idea for a swap!

I also was never censored in what I read. If I wanted to read it, it was OK with my folks, and yes I probably read some stuff that most people wouldn't let their kids read. However, I don't think it corrupted me or turned me into some horrible person. I think it made me more well-rounded and more apt to actually read a lot, which is a good thing! Thanks to all the comments everyone is posting.

I know this isn't he best resource, as it is Wikipedia, but this link has books not only banned in America, but in other countries also. Quite interesting! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listofbooksbannedby_governments

I think this is the list I will use for my postcard, if that's alright, as this is an international swap.

Thanks delavia! I remember looking over the Wikipedia list last year for banned book week -- can't believe I forgot to look there for this swap! I'm going to check it out right now.

Banning books is anathema to any curious, interested, informed type of person, and I'll be curious to see if Australia has a history of banning quite the amount of books the US has. (Hope not!) As for censorship, my parents never knew or cared what I read, to their credit (well, they might have cared; that would have been nice!), but I still covered my first and only trashy sex novel in patterned paper so I could read it in public. I was all of 13 and I must say - that book did me the world of good. ;)
