Did you know that February 23rd is National Banana Bread Day? Well yes it is. Guess what it is time to do? Make some delicious banana bread and enjoy some.

Banana bread is a dish that’s been around for approximately 87+ years, although there are a few different origin stories about this product that might alter that timeframe slightly. It first rose in popularity during the Great Depression in the United States and has continued to be a popular food item ever since. It’s popular enough to have its own holiday, National Banana Bread Day, a day celebrated annually on February 23rd.

We couldn’t find out the history of National Banana Bread Day, so we decided to go ahead and talk about the history of banana bread instead. Even though many people are familiar with this type of bread, we’re willing to bet that there aren’t many people who have given its history much thought, so we hope that this section will change that fact.

Americans started making a lot of banana bread during the 1930s. Although this product had been made by people before the Great Depression, it wasn’t until baking powder and baking soda became popular that the recipe for banana bread started showing up in American cookbooks. It became so popular because it took bananas that were too ripe to be eaten in other ways and turned them into something delicious that could be enjoyed by all.

As we said earlier, however, banana bread was being made by some people before the 1930s. The earliest mention of banana bread that we could find was one that came from the Vienna Model Bakery. This was a bakery chain that had bakeries in St. Louis, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New York City. In an advertisement in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, it also became a popular food during WWI when bananas were abundant on the island chain and had to be used.

*Before the invention of baking soda and powder, people used pearlash for making banana bread.

*Banana bread is a quick bread because it contains baking powder but doesn’t have yeast.

*Banana bread is rich in potassium.

*Bananas first arrived in the U.S. right after the Civil War.

This day can be celebrated by securing your favorite banana bread recipe and making one that will impress your friends and family. If you don’t want to make your own banana bread, you can instead head out and buy one from your local grocery store or bakery.
