Description:

How about an ATC swap where you try something different. I have collected scads of ideas as well as come up with some of my own to make ATC’s. I will post a technique, and you get to try something new (or old depending on your experience) and share your results. I am hoping to do this monthly if it is popular.

What is an ATC?

An ATC is an artist trading card. The only rule is the size, 2.5x3.5 inchesYou can trade them but not sell them. Don’t forget to put your information and sign them on the back!

May ATC Technique

This is the first ATC technique I ever tried. I can’t find the link, so I can’t credit the originator. Materials needed 1.Acrylic paint, 3 colors 2.A playing card for a base 3.a page from a book, dictionary 4.a rubber stamp 5.black pigment ink 6.a cosmetic sponge

Directions:

Smush your acrylic paint on your playing card, lightest to darkest in this manner –lightest in the center, darker on left, darkest on right, don’t clean the sponge in between and don’t worry if the card shows through. Diagonals work great too. Add paint till you’re happy with it. Feel free to blend paint together over each other or whatever. Let dry.

Add a piece of text to the left side, angled up toward the right. Use a glue stick or whatever your favorite adhesive is.

Ink up your stamp and stamp slightly above center and to the right or left

Let dry and add some decorative tissue paper, vellum or napkins work great too.

Add more text if you feel like it needs it. Embellish with a charm or fiber. Mine is embellished with painted and stamped puzzle pieces.

Feel free to experiment and substitute different materials, put the text in a different place, use an image instead of rubber stamping one. Post about your difficulties and successes, your experiments and your ideas. This is a starting place. Have fun.

This is a technique swap so you can pick your own subject.

You will have 3 partners and send one card to each partner. This is international. I check ratings and profiles and will use both to influence who can play. Newbies welcome, people new to ATC’s welcome too.

This sounds interesting. I'm going to give it a try since I've got time to try it and drop if I can't create anything acceptable. I don't think that will happen though! Thanks for the challenge!

Okay, left out one part that I like to do for the background, after painting, I like to stamp the background with a word or letter background stamp in a very subtle color. It really adds interest as you're building up the background.
another piece of advice - don't get too attached to your backgrounds, they are backgrounds, most of it is going to get covered up.

Partners have been assigned - if you have questions, suggestions, rants because the red paint won't come off your hands - lol - post away. Let's share our trials and our success! Dianne

Since we are supposed to make comments...I am having a bit of trouble with my paint sticking to my cards...I should have roughed them up with a little sandpaper first. Lesson learned, I guess that's the point!

I work in layers suzy, i may not get the card completely covered in one go round, i let it dry a bit then go back over it. you can rough it up to help the paint stick as well, but i haven't done that. i usually do a bunch of backgrounds at a time, do one color, then go through with the next. i work pretty fast but do 8 or 9 cards at a time. by the time i do the first color all the way through, then start the second, the first has had a bit of time to dry. I also must add that if i need it to dry faster i've been known to use a heat gun. Dianne

okay, my bad, i seem to have forgotten to add my swap card in with my cards that i sent out. I thought i wrote my swap bot name on the card but I guess i forgot that too! sorry for the confusion. cards went out to betsy g, cindynvb and fingers, inc last week so if you get a card from Dianne, it's me. duh.

I have a few words of advice, do not use cards from a casino!! I have some and noticed how slick they were, so I didn't even try them. Since I had my paints out and already had a mess (on my waxed paper), I decided to do some 12 x 12 sheets. I even went so far as to make my background papers for the tipin swaps I am in. I'm glad I joined this swap!! Diane, will you please post in the June swap discussion when you put up the July swap? Thanks

Wow! I loved this tech. I didn't have any trouble getting the paint to stick and I did like leaving it a bit thin in some places so the card shows through. I did find that once dried the paint scratched off easily so I used a gel medium to adhere the graphic and doily and to seal the whole thing over. I painted some other cards and tags with the same tech. once I got started and found that some thinner cards that I used tended to curl up more than the heavier casino cards that I started out with. This was great fun and I've learned something that I will use over and over in the future! My cards went out to my partners a couple hours ago - Christine, Marlene and DeAnne. Also uploaded a scan of my card a few minutes ago. Also received one from Mickey - I love it! I also love all the others in the gallery, seems like everyone had good outcomes with this tech.
