Description:

Hello and welcome to the (hopefully) bi-weekly (i.e. every 2 weeks, not twice a week could you imagine??) short story swap! Serious writers, novelists, journalers, amateurs, bed-time story connoisseurs- everyone welcome, regardless of skill or ability!

For this swap, you will write a short story (5,000-10,000 words) for your partner using the assigned prompt, in whatever interpretation you wish!

This round's prompt is: Mist

Please include a note with your username and the swap name, and any other info about your story, INCLUDING ANY POTENTIAL TRIGGER WARNINGS.

Please note:

-Swappers are welcome to type or handwrite their stories, but please make sure if it is handwritten that it is legible and falls within the word count guidelines.

-All languages are welcome, but if writing in a language other than English please make sure that the person you are sending to can read and understand that language.

-No extras are required for this swap, but feel free to include any notes or extras you feel your partner would like!

-You are more than welcome to start writing your story before the partners have been announced, but once they are please check to make sure the subject matter will be okay with your partner.

Finally, please don't use previously written material or excerpts of larger works or books you may have written. Promotional materials outside of the story are okay (to a certain extent- don't go overboard, the story should be the star of the package. For instance, a business card, promotional bookmark or a note about a blog would all be okay, but a bunch of flyers or a discount code or coupon are a bit too far- just use your common sense.) but the purpose of this swap is to stretch our writing muscles, make new writing friends and have fun, not to promote ourselves or sell books.

This swap is open to ratings 4.8 and higher and is Newbie friendly. No unexplained 3's newer than 6 months, or 1's newer than 1 year. I will be looking over the profiles of everyone who signs up, and removing anyone that doesn't fit those criteria, and doesn't have a well filled out profile. If I do remove you from this swap I will let you know why, and I will be more than willing to let you back in or include you in a future round if that reason is fixed or explained.

If you don't receive anything, please rate a 1 and let me know- I will try to angel if I can. I will try to contact those who haven't sent 1 week after the send by deadline, but past that I won't be monitoring flakers, so do let me know if you need me to angel. Please keep in mind that this is an international swap and mail is extremely slow in some places right now, so letters from some countries could take up to a few months to arrive.

Have fun everyone, and happy writing!

(And please don't hesitate to send me a note or leave a comment with any questions, queries, or qu-oncerns? (terrible, I know, I couldn't help it). I'm here to help!)

Thanks for posting writing swaps -- I'll probably join all of them as I like to have goals, not necessarily prompts but prompts are okay too. I often write shorter short stories as so many journals want flash fiction,(under 1000 words). 5000 is quite a bit of story telling -- challenging.

@junemoon I balked slightly at the long length too, but it will certainly get the writing muscles moving! I just realized I have only a few days left to finish #2. :o

I’ve already made mine! I can’t wait to send!

After the intense pressure to get the May one done (I started late,) I almost didn't join this one. 5k is SO MANY words for a short story. But then I had a fun idea in another genre. I think between starting early and choosing something a little more light, I will be able to write faster. ;)

Question for everyone! (Of course I will also address my swap partner directly once they've been assigned.)

This would go as a major trigger warning, (or, in the event my partner is averse, I will edit parts out for them!) but everyone happens to read my comment and wants to weigh in before partners are assigned, that'd be cool. :D

So, um. I didn't have any intention of this story taking an erotic turn. But it did. And while it's not gonna be super explicit, and I can cut it for the swap (the characters having sex is part of the story, but the scene itself could be edited down to a fairly tame line or two if needed,) ... it might get a little, um ... funky.

Again, not at ALL what I expected. Not my usual type of writing. :o

I'll definitely address my partner when they are assigned...

But if ya happen to read this, would you, personally, if you turned out to be my recipient, rather I clip those bits for the swap?

Babsiepoo 05/28/2020 #

So if I understand correctly it has to be about mist?

kazthegoose 05/28/2020 #

@FeltPrincess I can't speak for anyone else's behalf but that'd be fine with me!

FeltPrincess 05/28/2020 #

@Babsiepoo As I understand it, a prompt is for inspiration or a jumping-off point. Mist should be mentioned or featured in the story in more than just a single passing instance, but does not have to be the focus or plot of the story.

Al may correct me if I am wrong.

@kazthegoose cool ty Lol

Babsiepoo 05/29/2020 #

I would love to read all of your stories omg!! I’m so excited :)

Babsiepoo 05/29/2020 #

@FeltPrincess thank you!!

Hey all- so sorry for the late reply, I haven't been on as much these last few days and sadly swap-bot doesn't seem to send notifications for comments. @junemoon @feltprincess I totally agree on the length- it can be quite difficult to crank out a 5,000 word story in a week! I will leave this one at the limit it's at, but for all future swaps in this Short Story series I'll be lowering the requirements to 2,000-5,000 words, and extending the "writing period" to 2 weeks. It's the first swap series I've hosted so there were bound to be a few bumps in the road :) @feltprincess I'd personally be a-ok receiving a story of that nature, but I'll assign partners in a second so you can ask whomever you get paired with directly! @babsiepoo the prompt is meant as a way to get things flowing. it can be about mist, contain mist, be an allegory for mist, whatever floats your boat! As long as it's either obvious to the reader what the connection is, or you include a note explaining the route you took I hope that helps- please feel free to message me if you have any more questions or concerns! -Al <3

ALSO- I forgot to mention, I am starting 2 new series (aside from this and the poetry series I already run) soon- a flash fiction one (50-1500 words) and a micro-fiction (less than 50 words) postcard one if you're looking for something much more bite-sized. Thanks again!

junemoon 05/31/2020 #

To answer original question: I'm always okay with sex however explicit if it is integral to the story.
The addition of a flash fiction series is fine. The super short doesn't appeal to me but, hey,I I've got plenty to do so I can skip that. I have mixed feelings about prompts, these have worked okay as part of the story ... so far unsure about 'marbles" but have a sidewise idea. I agree babsiepoo, I love reading what others have done with a challenge, maybe once this gets rolling comfortably we can have a method of asking to see other's stories and receive them by email just as extras. Just a thought.
