Description:

Those pesky plastic shopping bags just keep piling them up, but throwing them out is bad for the environment and wildlife. Why waste them? You can cut bags into strips and crochet, knit, weave, hook or needlepoint rugs, door mats, tub or shower mats, totes, purses, hats, shoes, jewelry, clothing, animals and more. By using various colors you can create stripes and other effects.

For this swap you will make one item or set of whatever you want, and send to one partner. Make it something substantial, that takes an hour or more to make once you have the yarn prepared.

Warning: making the plastic yarn is time consuming and it takes a lot of bags. I'm giving plenty of time on this swap so you can collect bags from friends and neighbors if you need to, and to give you time to make the yarn.

These sites give directions for making the "yarn":

A bunch of kids at a local school made sleeping mats for the homeless with these bags. Great idea for a swap!

I really want the pattern for the coral sea creature. Have you seen the picture?

Wow, this brings back childhood memories! My mom used to take bread wrappers and crochet colorful throw rugs that she would put in front of the kitchen sink! I am going to see her tomorrow to find out just how to make one! I can't wait, this is going to be so much fun!

where is the picture of the sea creature? Is it on one of the sites listed? I would love to see it...

caution: plastic bags will dye wooden needles. do not use your best rosewood needles in this project!

I now have blue bamboo needles :D

Wow Cloverst that got to you faster than I expected! I hope you like it! It was lots of fun to make :-)

I love it thanks! And it certainly helps tame the carrier bag collection!

Mine is out to Messy-jessie :p tomorrow! I gave up on knitting in favour of weaving and I hope you like the outcome!

I'm so sorry - I missed the post this morning so mine is going to be sent late. The post office isn't open until Tuesday so I'll send it then. Sorry!
