Description:

This is my first try at coordinating a swap so bear with me!

In this swap you will "make" a ball of yarn. What you will do is cut about 12 inch pieces from lots of your yarn stash(all different colors and textures - the more the better!) and then tie it together in a random order and wind it up. You will then pick a neutral color yarn (white, off white, or black) and send these 2 yarns together. When you get your yarn, knit them together (using one strand of the neutral and one strand of the yarn ball) using garter stitch (or any stitch you like) and you get a fantastic scarf! Please make your yarn ball about the same size as the neutral yarn you are sending. For the neutral yarn, please send something that you would want to knit with and wear (LYS Quality).

open to the US and Canada only and to swappers with 4.5 or higher. I will consdider Newbies, but they must have a full profile.

You can say below what neutral you would like to have.

I would like to have White as my neutral color

telizas 12/ 4/2008 #

What a great idea! I have this on my Watchlist!

whiteway 12/ 4/2008 #

why only to US? Can you add Canada as well?

beaglemom 12/ 4/2008 #

Yes - I will add Canada. I am trying to keep shipping down. I just sent a package to Germany and it cost me over $20.

kgeslab 12/ 4/2008 #

off white would work best with my brown coat. Black would work with my purple coat. You pick, but NO RED HEART YARN PLEASE!!!

kgeslab 12/ 4/2008 #

And I've seen a scarf like this and it was BEAUTIFUL! Great idea beaglemom!

What does LYS Quality mean? Since we're using different pieces from our stash is there a requirement for what kind of yarn? I think a mixture of different types and a few fun fir pieces would look awesome. You said different colors and textures, but I want to make sure. Thanks!

What I was talking about for Local Yarn Shop Quality is for the neutral yarn - the white, black or off-white. Personally I would not want Red heart supersaver yarn as my neutral because it does not feel so good against the skin.

As for the yarn ball that you make - you can use any type of yarn - whatever you have on your stash - fun fir, wool, cotton, sock yarn, all different weights and feels. Does this make better sense?

How do you suggest tying the yarn pieces together?

euphoria 12/ 4/2008 #

This is such a COOL idea! I like that you specify LYS quality yarn for the neutral. I have a lot of different "qualities" of yarns in my stash (though none are Red Heart! LOL); it should make for an interesting scarf.

I am wondering about the size of the yarn ball we're to make; is there a minimum size requirement? I wouldn't want to get only enough yarn to make an American Girl size scarf. :) Also, for the neutral, is worsted weight pretty much what we're going for?

Sorry for all the questions; I just want to be sure I get this right. :)

euphoria 12/ 4/2008 #

Oh, and I would like a cream or very pale beige for my neutral, please.

beaglemom 12/ 4/2008 #

Reikimommy - When I did the my first one, I just tied double knots and did not have any problems.

beaglemom 12/ 4/2008 #

euphoria - It should be worsted weight - I will go back and adjust the description! As for the minuimum amount - I would say between 300-400 yards would be enough. I went and checked some patterns and they all pretty much fall in that range.

hooksnstamps 12/ 4/2008 #

Is this just for knitters or can crocheters join too?

beaglemom 12/ 5/2008 #

Anyone can join - I just only could pick 3 catagories.

maltagirl 12/ 6/2008 #

if you use wool yarns for the 12 inch pieces you can literally felt them together! just get the ends wet and rub then together in your hands like you were rolling a playdough snake:) I like this swap Idea!

crochetjunkie 12/ 8/2008 #

I don't know if this is the obvious idea, but leaving the "tails" on the end of the different colors would make this scarf look really neat I think. I saw a rug made like this with all the tails left on and it looked so cool!! I have just gotten into doing knit, specifically the stockinette stitch and I think this would look great with that stitch! Plus I have found with knitting you can use any kind of yarn and it is easy to keep count of your stitches. When I use different kinds of yarns when crocheting it gets difficult for me to count my stitches, or even be able to find them! this is a neat idea. I might go for it.

Cute idea.

beaglemom 12/ 9/2008 #

Crochetjunkie - that is exactly the neat part - all of the tails really make the scarf unique.

hi there, i am easygoing on color really. Love variety but do tend to stay away from neons. I like a blend of neutrals and a pop every so often. This will be fun and beautiful!

whiteway 12/16/2008 #

I would like cream/off-white or pale beige for my neutral please! Thanks! :)

winkipinki 12/16/2008 #

Do you have a picture of the one you made?

beaglemom 12/16/2008 #

I don't think I do. I gave mine away as a gift so let me see if I can get a pciture of my friend's!

SteepCreekLove 12/17/2008 #

I tend to look like a yard sale when I go outside so I'm not picky about the color. Surprise me! I can't wait to make this scarf.

elizamac117 12/26/2008 #

I'm not terribly picky about the neutral shade... but some gray would be nice!

Cassandra 12/29/2008 #

I would prefer cream/off white as my neutral color. Please no acrylics or scratchy wools or mohair as my neutral color. I prefer a soft wool as I can't wear scratchy wools.

whiteway 12/31/2008 #

I am so sorry, but I am going to have to drop this swap! I really wanted to do it - but I just can't right now...I hope you do this again in the future as I would still love to do it!

starseeker 01/ 7/2009 #

forgot to mention my colors and such! i am open to all colors, textures and fibers - though i lean toward natural fibers, anything soft is fine ;) for the neutral, same goes ... i don't care for loads of metallics, but a little sparkle is nice if you choose.

euphoria 01/15/2009 #

I'm making my ball and wondering if it's big enough? Right now it's about the size of a cantaloupe, but I can't help thinking it needs to be bigger. Did anyone actually measure their yarn who can tell me about what the size should be?

Cassandra 01/17/2009 #

I am going to weigh my ball of yarn and be close to comparison as the weight of the neutral skein. That's all I can suggest.

beaglemom 01/28/2009 #

Actually Cassandra that is a great idea!
