Continuing the M.A.I.L. (Mail Art Inspiration Love) with something .. inspired by a Google doodle. Ed Roberts was a tireless advocate for breaking down the barriers to independent living for folks with a number of disabilities/ physical and developmental conditions. He also was a really interesting human being -- don't take my word for it, check out some of these interviews and videos! I liked the "how babies are made" moment in the 60 Minutes one, but my son preferred the self-defense demonstration. Roberts' work directly contributed to pieces of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other accessibility laws throughout the world. So, here is the M.A.I.L. deal -- make one partner one piece of mail art inspired by the videos above and send it to them -- a zine, an ATC or two, 3inches x 5 inches of inchies, a polyptych in an envelope, a postcard, a pocket creation of some sort, an "envie", a ... well, what about a mailable mobility map? A brochure about the birds and the bees for 60 Minutes staff? A wheelchair with wings? ... be creative and let yourself go. I screen participants and angel any unsent swaps. I encourage everyone to believe in their ability and capacity to relate and to create -- why else are we human, indeed? |
