I'm thinking of things like: a sturdy yet pretty box for storing supplies, a small vase to hold pencils, pens, paintbrushes, etc., a zippered makeup bag for scissors and punches, a pincushion or needle box, a small sewing kit, a vintage tin for buttons, a beautiful old teacup for holding jewelry parts, etc....

Not only is this going to be a fun thrifting adventure, it's also about finding something useful - pick something that can have a clear and useful purpose for your partner. Then, tuck an unused or vintage item inside the object to let your partner know what purpose you had in mind; a button, a pen, or maybe a small bottle of acrylic paint as examples.
