This is going to be a different kind of swap. We are going to construct an altered cigar box as an ALTAR and rather than send the physical box to our partners, we are going to take photos and send those to our partner. Why, you might ask? Creating a Day of the Dead Altar is what we do to honor someone we love who might be an ancestor or a friend, or even a beloved pet. Sending the altar to someone else might not have the connection to it that you have which is why we will keep what we make and send PHOTOS to our partner. Find a cigar box either at a smoke shop, or craft store. It might be wooden, it might be sturdy cardboard. It will become a permanent altar for you to keep out all year or just during this season. November 2 is the official Day of the Dead. You can start making the altered cigar box altar as soon as you sign up. You will be keeping it for yourself and taking photos of the process to swap with your partner after partners are assigned. Consider who you would like to honor with this altar. It could be a beloved Pet/Familiar, or a good friend, or perhaps someone in your family who has passed. Ideas for this altar are endless, starting with a photo of them, something of theirs you have and never knew how to display or use. Decorate inside and out so that it tells the story. Then, for the swap part. Take at least 3 photos that tell the story of the construction of this altar as well as your relationship to the honoree when they were alive and how you want to remember them now that they have passed over the Rainbow Bridge. You might consider if in making this altar you found healing in some way. Share that with your partner. Share why you did what you did as you created it, and how you plan to use it. If you have questions, please let me know. There is no reason to flake on this swap because of how it works. Make the Altar. Keep it. Take photos of your process. Swap them. |
