Caution...This technique is addictive.

Using 2 or 3 little pots of H2 0s, spritz water once in the pot to activate the paint. On your craft sheet, spritz quite a bit of water larger than your ATC. Using one color at a time, spread the paint into your water on the craft sheet using a paint brush.

I used a clean paint brush for my next color & another paint brush for my 3rd color.

Now rub your cardstock over the watered down paint on the craft sheet. Look at the cardstock to see if you have the results you want. If not, you can rub it again to pick up more color.

Your background is now finished. Let it dry & adhere it to a sturdy back. Now finish the ATC any way you would like.

You may want to use rubber gloves if you do not want paint on your fingers.

I recommend you dry the paper with a heat gun after the first dip into the paint. Then you can add more if you like. You get a much more interesting result with cool pools of colour that way.

The directions I have do not say to dry it with a heat gun if you rub it again in the wet paint. I love the looks I achieved.

I suspect this is a stupid question. What is a craft sheet? Just a paper? Or a mat? Or a palette paper?

It is not a stupid question at all. We do not learn, if we do not ask. A craft mat or craft sheet is a heat resistant non-stick protective sheet for your table. Nothing penetrates it so, after your ink or paint dries you can wipe it off with a baby wipe or damp cloth. I love using a baby wipe to clean off paint & then after the baby wipe dries, I can use the baby wipe on another project. The craft sheets I have are made by Ranger but I am sure there are other brands. If you do not have one, a plastic plate will work

You can go expensive and buy a name brand one or a cheap alternative is to buy a silicon mat for baking. I bought a large one off of eBay for under 5$ with free shipping. I don't know if I would use it with a heat gun, have yet to try it but it cleans up easily when I have used it for inks or even a palette for my acrylic paints.

You get a smoother look without drying between dips and a more mottled variegated if you dry it. You choose or try both! Drying between helps opposing colours not turn into muddy messes. I prefer to not use opposing colours but that's me.

In the art world the technique used when transferring the color is called monoprinting. There are so many fun possibilities!

Any suggestions for the best paper to use? Watercolor? Glossy?

I'm thinking watercolor or bristol board would be a good choice.
