Description:

I am a huge fan of all things fair trade and chocolate as well, so I thought I'd start a swap to combine them!

For this swap, you will have one partner that you will send two bars of fair trade chocolate to. They can be any flavor or brand just as long as they are fair trade. If you have any allergies or dietary preferences (ie. no nuts if you're allergic or no milk or white chocolate if you are a vegan) list them in the comments below.

Send an extra bar or a (fair trade friendly?) profile surprise for hearts^_^ Also, I'd make sure it is wrapped well as there is a chance it might melt a bit as we're getting into summer... >.<

Newbies are welcome (with profile, please!). I'm going to keep it as US/Canada only for now, but if there's interest in an international swap, that could be done.

The timing is not good for me, but if you do another one later, I'd love to participate.

eruiel 06/ 4/2008 #

Well, as no one has signed up yet and it is the first day it's out, when would be better for you? I could likely change it... and if not, can do another later I'm sure!

Greenwoodtree 06/ 4/2008 #

I have too many other time intensive swaps with considerable expenses...but I wholly support fair-trade and make my own truffles...so would love to participate in a future swap like this.

eruiel 06/ 4/2008 #

I moved it forward a month as the dates seem to be a problem... otherwise, I will hold another one in the future and am glad to see some interest in the swap!

blagh 06/ 5/2008 #

I know it says US Only, but could a Canadian n00b get in on the action?

eruiel 06/ 5/2008 #

Aye, I think so^_^ I'll edit it to include Canada as postage shouldn't be too bad to/from up there.

Swan 06/ 5/2008 #

Thanks for changing the date. July should work for me :)

I don't like anything with peanuts or peanut butter (traces are ok, I'm not allergic, I just don't like the taste).

Dagsmeja 06/ 6/2008 #

I'd love to join, but unfortenately I live in Sweden. Please let me know if you make this international!

eruiel 06/ 6/2008 #

Swan--I'm so glad it can work for you now! Thanks for signing up!

Dagsmeja--it's hardly unfortunate that you live in the awesomeness that is Sweden! But I do understand how that would be bad for this swap... I will certainly let you know when/if it goes international! Thanks for being interested!

blagh 06/ 6/2008 #

Hooray, thanks!

eruiel 06/ 6/2008 #

blagh, I'm glad you've joined!

And as a note to the person sending to me: I am a vegan, so no milk or white chocolate, please! And if you would be so kind as to just scan the ingredients for fun things like butterfat and whey that would be awesome, but I won't be too picky^_~ Thanks!

Greenwoodtree 06/ 6/2008 #

HI! Since you changed the dates I had to join :-)

I do not like white chocolate by itself, am allergic to chili peppers & citrus fruits, but love milk chocolate in the 35%-60% cacao range..

These flavors are all fine too: peanut butter, almonds, dried fruits, pecans, coconut, mint

sportzmedchick 06/12/2008 #

what is fair trade? sorry if there's obvious answer :o(

eruiel 06/14/2008 #

No worries! Often times in foreign countries people are forced to work in almost slave like conditions (high hours, no/little benefits or vacation, low pay) as labor laws aren't set up to protect them and they have no other choice. That's why so many things are made in foreign countries--it's much cheaper that way if you don't have to pay your laborers well! Buying fair trade means they receive a fair price for their goods and that they are employed in a fair manner with things like benefits, good hours, good pay, safe working conditions, etc. An internet search will readily provide more info if you're interested^_^

As for chocolate, there are several fair trade brands around--usually they can be found in the organic section of the supermarket or at a natural food store etc. Some brands off the top of my head are Divine, Green and Blacks, and Dagoba but there are many more. There's usually a fair trade logo on the chocolate somewhere... it's black and white and has a person carrying baskets with a globe in the background... equal exchange is something to look for too. Hope this helps!

sportzmedchick 06/15/2008 #

Thanks -that's really interesting!! I think I will look to see if I can find them before I sign up though... lmao!!

girlonaglide 06/25/2008 #

Chocolate in July?? That spells melted goop in the mailbox. This would be a great winter swap. :)

eruiel 06/26/2008 #

Well, it'll refreeze^_~ But that is an excellent idea! I might try this again in the winter... thanks for suggesting it!

tamipal6 06/28/2008 #

This is too funny. I was just on your profile sending you a message regarding the six-word memoirs responding to how yours looked like you must have been influenced by my profile and I saw that you were signed up for a "fair trade chocolate" swap and since that is also something I'm really, really into (I've also been teaching about it and recently hosted a fair trade chocolate/coffee sale at my church)I thought I'd check it out. Now I see that YOU are hosting it! I see we have even more in common than I thought before. Fun "meeting" you! :)

Tami

tamipal6 06/28/2008 #

I'd actually like to wait till winter for this swap, too, though. I hope you do it again!

Greenwoodtree 07/ 7/2008 #

shoot IM going to have to leave the swap for now - let me know if you do another one.

Sublime87 07/15/2008 #

That a great idea..But i'm from Italy >.<

eruiel 07/16/2008 #

Sublime87--Aw... I'm sorry! I'll be doing another one that's international when it's cooler out, I promise! I'll let you know then. I just didn't know how this was going to work the first time through... thanks for your interest!

Greenwoodtree--sorry to hear it, but it's perfectly fine! I'll let you know when round two is posted... it will be sometime in the fall I'm sure. Thanks for your interest and for signing up!

Krazyquilts 07/22/2008 #

I forgot to state my chocolate preferences! I am not allergic to anything but I absolutely loath white chocolate. (However, if you find a white chocolate bar and you think it is just too cool and want to send it to me, my husband and my mother both really like white chocolate and love it when I get stuff in the mail for them.) My favorite is dark chocolate, especially with almonds. :-)
