Description:

As the weather turns to fall, I'm beginning to bring in seeds from my garden. Each year I trade seeds with friends and relatives, and as a result my garden becomes more interesting, diverse and full of personal meaning each year.

As I was sorting through some of these seeds the other day, I found myself wondering if there might be any SwapBot gardeners who were also interested in swapping seeds (either flower or vegetable), and thus a new swap was born.

Please send an amount of seed which would be enough to plant a small area in your garden (approximately 12-40 seeds, depending on how confident you are of their germination abilities). You will be sending to two partners in the USA (due to current laws on the import/export of seeds we will have to keep this within our national borders, I apologize in advance to our international SwapBot friends).

If your state has any additional limitations on seed crossing state lines, please do make the group aware of them below.

As ever, I will be checking all members profiles thoroughly before I assign partners. Please note that if you are currently showing as late on any swaps I will request that you follow through on those before participating in this swap. Newbies are welcome (with well-filled-out profiles).

I'm Aussie, but I think its OK to send seeds internationally as long as they are the commercially sealed foil ones..its if they are loose and from your garden it becomes an issuel Good luck though, sounds a great swap:-)

@Clearbrite thank you so much for your insight-- I'm fairly certain that you're right, but it seems like a bit of a murky area. I did ask a local postal clerk about this issue, and he mentioned that he felt that since USPS banned plants and "plant materials" from being shipped overseas that he wouldn't "knowingly" accept a package which had these items listed on the declaration form.

I know that things didn't seem as strict (as far as mailing items internationally) when I lived in Canada, but that may have also had something to do with certain countries (like Australia!) also being a part of the Commonwealth. :)

Anyway, if you feel that hosting a similar swap from Australia might make this sort of thing more accessible to international SwapBot members, you absolutely have my support!

Is packs of seeds from the store ok to send? I dont have seeds from my garden.

arianneroxa 09/21/2013 #

@hull33 Store-bought seeds would be fine, just as long as they were packed during the current year or for 2014 (all seeds have a "packed on/for" year printed somewhere on the packet) and also adhere to the category of "flowers or vegetables". Thanks for your question! :)

I harvest most of my garden seeds.

If I do get someone from Australia, I can send a packet. not foil wrapped but a new unopened bought from the store packet.

@fawnscraft Unfortunately my local post office has advised me that they will not accept seeds for international shipping (even if they are in a store-bought pack). For now, I will be keeping this as a 'USA Only' swap, although I'm very supportive if any other swappers would like to borrow this swap idea to create their own (potentially international) swaps.

@arianneroxa thank you for the information.

I am so happy you limited it to the USA then.

I went out the other day , the day before hubby was put in the hospital, well about 12 hours before, and harvested several different flower seeds. Some is a mix of wildflowers, and others are ones I will share wiht my partner and don't want to spill the beans so it can be her surprise.

@fawnscrafts that sounds lovely!
