Description:

I love playing with tiny art, and I love shrines. I got this idea for tiny shrines made in bottle caps. I made my samples in new (never used) metal bottle caps, but I imagine used bottle caps of any kind (metal, plastic, etc.) could be made into something interesting and beautiful.

We will be sending two bottle cap shrines to one partner. Maybe you could send along a cheery note to brighten your partner's winter and to share your experiences in making your shrines.

After receiving your shrines, feel free to come back and post a picture of what you received and tell us what you decided to do with them. For example, you may want to glue a magnet or pin to the back.

I will be banning anyone with less then a 4.5 rating and everyone with multiple no-sends.

Dumb question but -- do decorate the inside of the cap or the outside? I can't tell for sure from the picture (lovely caps BTW).

DreamHope 11/27/2006 #

Actually, that's a good question! I did the inside, because I like to nestle my shrines in things (like matchbooks and shadow boxes), but if you have an idea for just the outside, or for both the inside and outside, I say go for it.

Thanks!

user3760 11/28/2006 #

This idea is great!! I'm in. And if anyone needs caps, I have tons. Am giving some away on craftermath, but I'm also willing to send to anyone who needs any.-PHH

charlottenc 11/28/2006 #

Last dumb question (I promise!) - when you say "shrines", they don't have to be religious, right? Just something thoughtful and nice?

DreamHope 11/28/2006 #

Nonparieldolls: I think of shrines as being anything dedicated to a positive idea, whether embodied in a religious icon or not. So, I make a lot of little shrines to things like 'creativity' and 'peace' without any religious symbolism. Religious images are certainly welcome too, but they aren't necessary.

Princesshammerhead: Thanks for putting that offer out there! I'm lucky enough to have a local store that sells them, but I imagine that isn't the case everywhere.

graydragon 12/ 2/2006 #

I love making bottle cap shrines too! I'm new and in the UK so is it ok for me to join?

DreamHope 12/ 2/2006 #

Littledragon: You are definitely welcome to join! This is an international swap, and I'm only banning people who have shown themselves to be poor swappers. New swappers are welcome!

Coffeelatte 12/ 3/2006 #

OK...you've lured me in. This will be my first time making bottle cap shrines, but I am really excited about trying this!

DreamHope 12/ 3/2006 #

Coffeelatte: Welcome! This was my first time doing it too, and I've found it to be a nice un-intimidating project for a rainy or snowy afternoon.

I love your user name, by the way. Now I want another egg nog latte!

GirlCanCreate 12/ 4/2006 #

i will need some bottlecaps from princesshammerhead if possible! i am in Canada..do you think that you can get them to me soonish? If you could let me soon that would be wonderful...haven't seen any new blank bottlecaps around..

graydragon 12/ 5/2006 #

I like to use old bottle tops as I think they have more character! the best place to get new ones is a home brewing supplier, they are quite cheep but you do usually get lots! I got some from ebay!

lgj302 12/ 9/2006 #

I thought that this was a great idea when I saw it. I love the whole shrine concept and haven't worked this small before, so really look forward to giving it a try. Just finished altering matchbooks in a group I'm in and they turned into a shrine of sorts (I used the children's poem about Monday's child is...etc. and did a matchbook about each of my 4 children and myself and husband; then put them in a tin). Kind of off topic, but thought you all might enjoy hearing another sort of shrine project.

user2034 12/12/2006 #

Uh...I'm a lil'excited bout this swap...I hope I'll be able to do something good...never tried to make a shrine before...and bottlecpas are a real small item! ^_^

DreamHope 12/13/2006 #

Littledragon: Thanks for the tip about the home brew supplier. I bet they will be even cheaper there then at the craft store.

Laura: I want to try matchbook shrines. I've seen some really beautiful ones.

Tirabaralla: Bottle caps are really, really small. I like how mine came out, but there were a lot of materials and techniques I found that I couldn't use because the cap was just too tiny. Still, I love a challenge!

user2034 12/14/2006 #

That's a good point ^_^ I'll try my best!

user3674 12/16/2006 #

Upps, I haven't sent it yet!!!! Sorry, that was the wrong click (wanted to see my partner).

DreamHope 12/16/2006 #

Charlotte: I wanted to get my partner's name too, but the pop-up is coming up blank! Did you manage to actually get the name and address?

Hopefully I'll be able to get the address in the morning, because I really wanted to get the swap into the mail before I board the plane tomorrow.

user3674 12/16/2006 #

No, I haven't got name and adress, the pop-up is blank too

graydragon 12/16/2006 #

Mine is coming up blank, several that finished that day seem to be!

lilmissthrifty 12/16/2006 #

mine is blank too

Coffeelatte 12/16/2006 #

Mine's blank too...

Just wanted to share that I made several of these during the past week and am really excited about how they are coming together. It is hard to get a design that appears bold enough to satisfy me when it's reduced down to such a small size, but I am enjoying this project!

DreamHope 12/16/2006 #

I'm not the only one who was eager to get these out!

Unfortunately, I need to go to the airport pretty soon. If the address doesn't start showing up, maybe someone could email the site? I would, because as swap moderator I probably should, but I won't have any way of receiving a response if there is one.

I'll be back before the "send by" date, so mine won't go out late... it just won't go out as early as I'd hoped.

Cheers!

user2034 12/17/2006 #

Now everything seems to work...I've got my partner... ^_^

user4899 12/19/2006 #

Anspach, mine went out to you today and I hope that since we live in the same STATE, they will arrive quickly!!

user3760 12/20/2006 #

Hello all! For some reason, my notifications of posts are not coming through. If any one needs caps please email me dnicolson@sasktel.net

Provide your full mailing address and I will send out asap. Also, my partner is not showing up? -PHH

Coffeelatte 12/22/2006 #

By the way...I made my first batch of bottle caps and have posted one of the ornaments I made for friends out on my Flickr site.

user3674 12/26/2006 #

Hi,

now I have sent my bottle caps :-)

Greetings and a happy new year Charlotte

Glenn 12/29/2006 #

Noel, you're my partner and I just moved and more of my baggage (including your bottle cap shrines)won't be here til the 6th of january. I'm sorry for the delay and I'll definitly have them out on the 6th and add a 3rd and maybe a 4th one because i feel so bad!!

lgj302 12/30/2006 #

I received my shrines yesterday. They are so cute and are now on my fridge (she made them magnets). One was a bird's nest which is 1 of my favorite images! The other is a cute little Buckingham Palace type guard image. She also enclosed a beautiful card (which will find its way into a collage in my art journal) and teabags. What a treat! Thanks again to Danielle.

AngelFaeryKathleen 12/31/2006 #

"Wren on the run" Look out for your Shrines as they have been in the post since the 29 or 30th. But with all the holidays it make take longer that the week to get to the US from New Zealand.

This was a fun swap to do and I hope dreamhope runs it again----pleeeease.

Glenn 01/ 1/2007 #

i agree, dreamhope please make this a consistent thing! I never heard of bottle cap shrines before and am now officially addicted to making them :)

DreamHope 01/ 2/2007 #

I'm so glad you guys enjoyed this swap so much! I've posted another one - hope to see you there!

user3674 01/ 4/2007 #

Danielle,

opps, the caps are from me.............I was too busy and so I forgot to write something-what a slackness :-/ :-)

Greetings Charlotte

Coffeelatte 01/ 4/2007 #

Would my partner notify me if they have already sent (or not -- either way, please let me know)? I have to travel out of the country the 10th through the 17th and want my family to watch for the package if it's on the way.

AngelFaeryKathleen 01/ 8/2007 #

Hi Donnaj, your fabulous shrins arrived in New Zealand on Monday and I love them. Thanks a bunch for them and all your work and the extras in with them.

JaneR 01/11/2007 #

I received mine from Kate aka wrenonthe_run, they are fantastic. I love them. Thank you, Kate!

Creativechange, have yours arrived yet? I am worried that that are lost and I need to send the swap again.

pandagirl 01/11/2007 #

I sent mine to Charlotte on the 30th. I received mine from Cindy today (01/10/07). They are fantastic.

user1382 01/11/2007 #

hello JaneR I have not gotten them yet...i'll keep my eyes open for them. Melanie Sweet aka nerk76 did you receive the ones i sent to you? hope so! :-)

artantics 01/11/2007 #

Thank you Giovanna. I received mine today. I love them.I was so thrilled to receive something in the mail from Firenze, my favourite city on this planet!! I don't get to go back until 2008, so I'm very envious of your living there.

user1382 01/13/2007 #

Hello Jane, I got the shrines. THANKS! "ENJOY LIFE"...that definitely resonates with me! :-) Keisha aka Creative Change

JaneR 01/14/2007 #

Wow, I guess the first set I made is gone forever in the mail system. LOL The second set arrived in 2 days. :-) I hope you'll change my rating when you get a chance, thanks!

user3674 01/18/2007 #

No bottle-caps arrived :-(

pandagirl 01/18/2007 #

I mailed my bottle caps on the 30th. I realize that was the last day of the swap. I guess the holidays and a death in the family prevented me from mailing sooner. The bottle caps are being sent to Germany from the US. It does take a little while to get there. I will send you another set since these appear to be missing.

threesweetpeas 01/18/2007 #

southernxpacific, i hope you havent forgotten me......... no worries just a nice reminder:)

pandagirl 01/20/2007 #

I think the reason why Charlotte has not received her shrines from me is I sent them to an address in Berlin. She now has a different address in another city. I believe the low rating she has given me is unfair.

user3674 01/20/2007 #

the rating isn't unfair. I haven't got the bottle-caps. And both adresses are fine. The Berlin adress is the adress of my fiancé because I'm travelling between both adresses. From 16th of January I'm in Karlsruhe for work. But before and after the 16th of january no bottle-caps in the Mail. I have asked my fiance and there wasn't a mail for me

threesweetpeas 01/21/2007 #

southern, how great they arived in perfect condition, we will make magnets for the fridge:) thanx

pandagirl 01/22/2007 #

Jan 22 Still waiting for Charlotte to receive my bottle cap shrines. She hasn't changed the rating so I guess she has not gotten them yet, I mailed them on December 30th (the last day to mail for the swap). She will be able to see this by checking the postmark. Hopefully she will change the rating.
I should not be penalized because of poor mail service and her changing her address.

pandagirl 01/24/2007 #

jan 23 Apparently Charlotte has still not received my bottle cap shrines. I have sent two more to her "new" address. Hopefully she will get these and alter her rating.

pandagirl 01/24/2007 #

jan 24 Charlotte has apparently still not received my bottle cap shrines.

pandagirl 01/25/2007 #

jan25 Still no change in my rating by charlotte. I guess she has not received my bottlecaps or hasn't checked with her Berlin address or she hasn't been on swapbot to update.

pandagirl 01/26/2007 #

jan26 no change in rating so I can only surmise that Charlotte has still not received any of my bottle cap shrines.

pandagirl 01/27/2007 #

jan27 Charlotte must have received my shrines. She has changed my rating. I actually sent another shrine today. I guess she will get five total from me.
:)marie

pandagirl 03/ 8/2007 #

March 6 My envelope with my original two shrines returned to my mailbox. I sent them back to Charlotte at her new address. I hope they make it this time. :)
